About this screen: why it might work, and what it can miss

A company that earns a high return on its capital without borrowing is funding its growth from its own profits. Such businesses tend to come through downturns without needing to raise money.

  • Debt to equity is from the latest balance sheet; a company can borrow and repay within a year.
  • Banks and insurers are left out: borrowing is their raw material, so debt to equity does not apply.

A screen applies a rule to reported figures; it is not a recommendation to buy or sell.
